Corozo is a nut which grows on Palm trees, most commonly found in Ecuador.
The nuts themselves are 1-2 inches in diameter and a single tree can produce hundreds oF nuts in just one year. After hardening over a period of about 8 months, the 5-6 corozo nuts that are housed in each pod simply fall to the ground and are harvested. This is a much more gentle way of harvesting in comparison to other nuts such as almonds where the tree is shaken until the nuts fall which requires polluting machinery and can also reduce the lifespan of the tree. The harvesting of these nuts also provides a living for hundreds of people in the local villages. 

They are a great material for button production as they are protecting endangered rainforest lands whilst providing economic stability for local communities. The tagua nut can take between a few weeks and few months to turn rock hard depending on the weather. Once the nuts are hardened, they are cut and turned into buttons. Their natural colour is “off white” but they can be dyed any shade as required. Each corozo button has a unique grain - creating a faint impression that is as original as a fingerprint. As well as being eco-friendly, corozo is an ethical product too, given the way that they support local economies and families.
